Skyscrapers 'not killed off by recession'

Two massive multi-million pound skyscrapers have not been "credit crunched" and will go ahead despite the recession, developers insist.

More than three years have passed since Islington Council approved plans for a 26-storey and a 17-storey tower next to Regent's Canal and City Road Basin.

Critics of the 300-home development claim virtually no work has taken place on the site since the scheme was passed in 2006 - but Islington Council insists planning permission for the borough's biggest construction scheme is still valid.

Del Brenner, of waterway campaign group Regent's Network, said: "We would like to see the end of the towers.

“The Islington planners said there were some drains put in so the developers have started. I think whatever they did do is a bit minimal. There is no sign of any excavation or foundations, let alone drains."
